The Jesse Helms AIDS Bill?
In her infinite and apparently vacationing wisdom, Elizabeth Dole is pushing for an amendment that would rename an AIDS bill for the late homo hating Jesse Helms who passed away on July 4th.
On the one hand, I can’t help but to laugh at the sickening irony of the suggestion. Jesse Helms after all is the man who, in 1995, verbally opposed re-funding the Ryan White Act by saying that the government should spend less on people with AIDS due to the fact that they are sick because of their “deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct”. I could go on, but Joe.My.God sums it all up far better than I in his post on the topic here.
I am far more interested in what you think. Here is what a few people had to say on the topic:
I hear she’s moving on in life and, rather than simply amending bills for memorial purposes, will be introducing them outright.
For example, the James Earl Ray Slavery Reparations Bill.
…the Mel Gibson Defense of Israel Act.
…appropriations for the new Michael Richards Museum of Tolerance.
…the Brother John Birch Immigration Amnesty Bill.
I could go on and on. This is comedy gold.
I’m of several minds about this.
On the one hand, if it’s going to be a useless bill that does nothing but take money away from AIDS research in the most hateful way possible, then it’s appropriate.
On the other hand, I can think of nothing more ironic and at the same time incredibly offensive than his name being attached to a bill that funds AIDS research.
I’m not sure if that population wants his name attached to them in any way, shape or form. It seems kind of like Ms. Dole is either completely out of touch with what the man stood for at all, or she’s being kind of a vindictive bitch about him.
I can’t figure out who she’s trying to tick off– the gays or Helms’s voting base. If she’s not being disingenuous, then I’m amazed at her cluelessness.
Revolting or laughable? Leave a comment and tell me your take on the subject.
